Dental emergency guidance

Temporary remedies for common dental issues — and when to call us or go to the emergency room.

Call (256) 325-9393

⚠ If you are experiencing a life-threatening dental emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately.

At-home guidance

Temporary remedies.

The following guidance can help manage dental issues until you can be seen. If symptoms are worsening or you're unsure, always call our office at (256) 325-9393.

Sensitivity or pain after dental work

Some discomfort after dental treatment is normal. Cold sensitivity can last as long as a year. A desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne can help, and good oral hygiene — including frequent brushing and flossing — is essential for healing. If symptoms are improving, even gradually, be patient. If symptoms are not improving or are getting worse, call our office. Restorations that feel "too tall" will need to be adjusted by the dentist.

Tooth pain

First try an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or Aleve. Consult your physician before taking any medication. If over-the-counter options are not sufficient, see your physician or emergency room for a prescription pain reliever, then call us to schedule an appointment.

Swelling

The source of swelling can sometimes be difficult to determine. Any swelling that prevents swallowing or breathing should be evaluated by the emergency room immediately. Swelling limited to the edge of the gums beside a tooth may be caused by debris — try brushing and flossing the area well to remove any foreign particle, then call our office.

Broken or sharp tooth / lost filling

Most pharmacies carry temporary filling materials in their dental health care section. Orthodontic wax can also be used to cover rough or sharp areas on teeth. Temporary filling material may need replacement after meals. Call our office to schedule a proper repair as soon as possible.

Crown or bridge that has come off

Most pharmacies carry temporary dental cement in their dental health care section. Denture adhesive can also be used to temporarily affix a crown or bridge. If the crown or bridge does not feel secure, do not attempt to re-cement yourself — this prevents the risk of swallowing or fracturing it. Call us to have it properly re-cemented by Dr. Congo or Dr. Dean.

Pain in the jaw joint (TMJ)

If pain is caused by clenching or grinding, an over-the-counter bite guard can be used as a temporary measure. These are available at most pharmacies in the dental health care section. Call our office to discuss a custom-fitted night guard or splint for longer-term relief.
